Setting Goals for the New Year

Goal

Goals

If you would like to accomplish a new skill, quit smoking, lose weight or just get motivated to clean out your garage, the best way to proceed is by setting attainable goals. The following are some tips to help you get started:

Be specific. For example, instead of saying you want to save money, set a specific target amount to save per week and take action to automatically withdraw it from your checking to savings account.

Put it in writing. Write your goal down and put it somewhere you can see it on a daily basis. Focus on the positive; rather than writing “I will not eat junk food,” write, “I will make healthy choices every day.”

Create a plan. Set a time frame to meet the goal and small steps to work toward. Crossing items off your list can give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you motivated.

Share your goals. Sharing your goals with others close to you is a way of holding yourself accountable. When you share your goals, you are making a public statement about what you are going to accomplish. This makes you more likely to do the work necessary to achieve them.

Believe in yourself. Stay positive about your progress even when setbacks occur. If you slip up, refocus again right away.
